My Son, the Writer

Younger Son reported on his blog last week that he had broken Microsoft Word yet again.

This week, he finished the first draft of his novel.

All I know about it is that it’s science fiction, it clocks in at around 110,000 words, and that he accomplished this in 7 months of steady work while holding down an almost-full-time job.

Talk about being focused.

He knows that finishing the first draft is just the end of the beginning in the process of writing a novel. He knows he’s going to have to put it away for a few months to let it age, and then look at it with fresh eyes to see what works, what doesn’t, what needs to be added.

But the important thing is, he did it. He has finished his first first draft.

And I am very, very proud of him.

Update: He finally blogged about it himself, here.

Yay! I worry sometimes that writers get so focused on the next step that they don’t realize what an accomplishment even finishing a first draft of a novel is. You should be a proud mother!

WOW! Congratulations to him — and you!

It took me how many decades to finish my first draft…and you know all too well how focused I am not…. 🙂
